FPCC Gospel, Lesson 1
Religious comes from the Latin word for scrupulous. The word scrupulous means, of course, having scruples. What is a scruple, then? A scruple is that moment of uncertainty, that hesitation wherein you decide whats right, and whats wrong. A scruple, therefore, is a doubt. In the end, thats what religious means: doubtful. It is my conclusion that the truest meaning of faith, then, is not being sure. Faith is hope, but hope is not certainty. Certainty is the antithesis of religion.
